Doesburg proudly complements its historical buildings with modern architecture. The new construction project by the Italian architect Adolfo Natalini on the banks of the IJssel is but one fine example. Apartments along the levies and in a 12-storey apartment block now form a bridge between the historical city centre and the IJssel. The architect clearly had one eye trained on the surrounding countryside! The twists and bends of the meandering IJssel can even be seen in the design of the apartments. And the use of materials like zinc in the construction work is an obvious reference to the water all around.
